Deborah Greenblatt and David Seay continue to introduce folk music from around the world to young musicians. The colours and idiosyncrasies of Ukrainian traditional songs and dances feature toe- tapping syncopations and haunting tonalities especially the Ukrainian Dorian mode. Greenblatt dedicated these duets to her Ukrainian grandfather, so this publication has a personal touch.

“Ukrainian Fiddle Tunes for Two Violins, compiled and arranged by Deborah Greenblatt, is a delightful and welcome addition to violin repertoire. There are 36 Ukrainian fiddle tunes which include some folk and military songs as well as some dances, among others. Something I found particularly appealing in this compilation was the varying levels of difficulty. While the first violin part was one level of difficulty, the second violin part was often much easier. For me, this makes it usable across a private studio with various levels of of students’ skills. I’m delighted to have Ukrainian Fiddle Tunes, both to teach and to perform,”

Deborah Greenblatt, who has been teaching, composing and performing since 1971, is also a prolific arranger of a wide variety of tunes that range from traditional early music to folk songs from diverse cultures. These books are clearly printed and easy to read. Most of the tunes are of a moderate length (one page with repeats). The forms include the polonaise, minuet, bourree and rondo. The melodies are typically charming, as is characteristic of the lighter music of this era. Overall the collection offers some pleasing additions to the libraries of lower intermediate players who are fond of music from the early Classical era arranged for recorder.

“...perfect for anyone wanting to not only learn French traditional tunes for fiddle playing, but also to see the French influence on songs that became popular in the Americas. The French compilation contains many simple and well-recognized tunes such as ‘Free Jacques’ and ‘Au Clair De la Lune’ as well as a number of French versions of polkas, schottisches, and other dance tunes.”
...Matt Merta Fiddler Magazine, Spring 2021
“As is typical of Deborah Greenblatt’s work, the arrangements of pleasing tunes are well done and accessible to a diverse audience of recorder players.
These editions are accessible to intermediate players. Rhythms are generally straightforward. The textures are a mix: artfully arranged polyphony or homophony, and some in which one line carries the melody and the other serves an accompaniment function. Because of the skillful arrangements, they would be very effective in concert performances.
There are no difficult keys. Chromatic notes are found, and in a few cases, they are a bit challenging.
This edition would make for great additions to one’s recorder library. Because they contain a mix of easier and a bit more challenging pieces that are pleasingly arranged, they offer less and more experienced players both a challenge and an opportunity to play simply for the enjoyment of the music.”
