Results for the 15th Annual NeASTA Fiddle Tune Composition Contest

The Nebraska Chapter of the American String Teachers Association would like to thank all who participated in the 15th annual NeASTA Fiddle Tune Composition Contest.  Their support of the Nebraska American String Teacher’s Association, and the tradition of fiddling is greatly appreciated.

This year's contest included a wide variety of creative fiddle tunes from all over the country.

The 2017 contest's top three places are are listed below. The tunes along with interviews of the composers, will be published in the September 2017 edition of the NeASTA's journal, Stringing Along.  A YouTube video about this year’s contest, featuring the first place tune will be online later this summer.

3rd Place “That’s A Woodchuck” by: Steve Scott

NeASTA would like to acknowledge and thank the following three judges for their help, time, and expertise reviewing the many quality tune submissions:

Adam Tanner -  Adam’s approach to playing reflects the diversity of styles heard on the early 78rpm discs and field recordings that inspired him while growing up in California. Over the last twelve years, Adam has toured in both the US and Europe as a member of The Crooked Jades, The Hunger Mountain Boys and The Twilite Broadcasters. As a staff member of The Swannanoa Gathering, Adam has taught at Old-Time, Fiddle and Mandolin & Banjo Weeks. Making his home in Weaverville NC, he teaches private lessons in old-time fiddle, mandolin and guitar, and is currently on staff at East Tennessee State University’s, Bluegrass, Old-Time and Country Music program.

Joe Fedrizzi - Joe is a recent Kansas State music education graduate, who grew up in the Northern Missouri/Missouri Valley fiddling traditions. In his spare time, Joe enjoys playing with country bands or just about anyone looking for some hard driving fiddle, and can also been seen on stages across the Midwest at fiddle contests.

Heidi Copeland - Heidi is our NeASTA member representative judge who grew up in Kearney, Nebraska. For over eight years, Heidi played in touring Celtic and country bands before settling down in the Omaha area where she now teaches violin and fiddle in her private studio.

Now is the time for fiddle tune enthusiasts everywhere to sharpen your pencils and prepare to create more exceptional new music for the 2018 16th Annual NeASTA Fiddle Tune Composition Contest.
